Information for the Community Training in Nonprofit Management.

 

Minnesota Valley Action Council, working in partnership with the Greater Minneapolis Council of Churches and Fairview Health Services, is pleased to offer a series of community workshops in nonprofit management.

The workshops are designed to address key issues faced by both community-based and faith-based organizations working to meet critical human needs at the grassroots level. Executive directors, board members, key staff, and community volunteers are invited to attend.

Dates: May 12 and 13 - four workshops offered
Location: AmericInn Lodges and Suites, 240 Stadium Road, Mankato
Cost: Free, but registration is required.

Wednesday, May 12th
9:00 to Noon - Enhancing Governance Leadership
presented by Jeanne Murphy, growth strategist, treaner & speaker
 
Gainn a framework for engaging volunteer leaders at a higher capacity level. Topics include:
  • Board Governance basics: roles and responsibilities of nonprofit board members
  • The Roles of the Board Chair & Committees
  • Tips for Maximizing meetings
 
Noon to 1:15 - Break for lunch on your own at local restaurants, or 'brown bag' your lunch, and catch up on your calls and e-mails
 
1:15 to 4:15 p.m. - Strengthening Strategic Leadership
presented by Jeanne Murphy, growth strategist, treaner & speaker
 
Learn how to develop and use tools to guide decision-making. Topics include:
  • Mission, Vision, and Core Values - creating a unified long-term focus
  • How to use the strategic planning process to guide your organization
  • Aligning people's daily efforts around what matters
 
Thursday, May 13th
9:00 to noon - Fundamentals of Budgeting
presented by Phil Hatlie, Nonprofits Assistance Fund
 
Budgets are the foundation of nonprofit finance and are vital to your organization's strategic planning and management. This workshop will prepare you to craft a budget for your program or organization. Using everyday English and a real world example as a case study, we will walk through the budgeting process in ten steps. The importance of ongoing cash flow management will also be discussed. Take this workshop in conjunction with Fundamentals of Nonprofit Finance for a comprehensive overview of nonprofit financial management.

1:15 to 4:15 p.m. - Fundamentals of Non Profit Finance

Nonprofit finance has unique rules, conditions, and terminology. This session will provide an introduction to financial reports, the accounting rules governing restricted funds, and nonprofit reporting requirements. The trainer will unpack financial jargon and use real nonprofit examples to illustrate key concepts. You will learn to clarify financial roles and responsibilities and to create effective internal controls and policies. Take this workshop in conjunction with Fundamentals of Budgeting for a comprehensive overview of nonprofit financial management.

Jeanne Murphy is a growth strategist, trainer, and speaker for Strategic Solutions in Hugo, MN.

Phil Hatlie, Nonprofits Assistance Fund - Loan Officer
Before coming to the Nonprofits Assistance Fund, Phil spent 15 years working as the lead finance person at three Minnesota nonprofits. He served as Director of Finance and Administration for the Greater Minneapolis Council of Churches and Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity, and as the Director of Operations for the Higher Education Consortium for Urban Affairs(HECUA).
