Minnesota Valley Action Council has an opening for
Reading Corps Tutor, Fairmont, Le Center, Mankato, Waseca
Collaborate with the teacher in a Head Start classroom to develop children’s early literacy and Kindergarten-readiness skills. Tutors will provide intentional and fun literacy instruction throughout the day to children ages 3-5. Work with the whole class, small groups of students, and one-on-one. Daily activities include greeting children at arrival, helping children write their names at sign-in, encouraging mealtime conversations, writing a daily message, conducting Repeated Read Alouds, journaling, and enhancing literacy during choice time. Conduct quick and easy literacy assessments, and enter the student data into an online data system. Tutors will use this data to monitor student progress, plan, and set goals. Provide opportunities for families to get involved in their child’s education by sharing Reading Corps literacy activities to do at home. Attend 3 days of mandatory training in August plus additional required training sessions throughout the year. Tutors will receive the consistent support of an onsite coach. Some travel may be necessary to attend training. Service hours are completed onsite during program hours.
Strong interest in education, specifically in helping preschool children develop their literacy skills, Dedication to community service and ability to commit to a full term of service (August- May).Basic computer skills, including the ability to navigate online systems and email. Attention to detail. Organized, responsible, flexible, motivated, and professional. Ability to accept and incorporate constructive feedback from coaches and program staff. Excellent time management and decision-making skills. Ability to work with diverse personalities and adapt to the classroom environment. Strong personal standards of excellence, ethics, and integrity
Eligibility Requirements Ability to speak, read, and write English fluently, Age 18 or older by the program start date. Possess a high school diploma or a GED by the program start date. Citizen, national, or lawful permanent resident alien of the United States. Please note: Applicants who have received deferred action for childhood arrivals (DACA) through the U.S. Department of Homeland Security are not eligible to serve as AmeriCorps members at this time.
Currently, AmeriCorps members are limited to four terms of service.
Tutors are paid a modest living allowance of $424.52 every two weeks during their service term and receive an education award of $4,138.19 upon successful completion which may be used to pay qualified student loans or tuition. Tutors over age 55 may choose to gift their education award to their child or grandchild. Tutors are eligible for health insurance, child care assistance, and student loan forbearance during their service. Tutors serve 7 hours/day or 35 hours/week.
