What is Head Start? So many folks don’t really know what the program is.  Head Start is a nationwide federally funded, family-centered school readiness program for eligible children and families ages birth to 5.  Agencies like Minnesota Valley Action Council, Inc. help deliver Head Start services to children and families in the core areas of early learning, health, and family well-being while engaging parents as partners every step of the way.

School Readiness is what it’s all about

Head Start is a FREE preschool program that:

  • Provides your child with a comprehensive, quality preschool education, ensuring children will be ready for Kindergarten through observation-based outcomes
  • Promotes school readiness by offering social emotional, cognitive, language, literacy, math and physical development
  • Uses research-based curriculums
  • Provides health wellness and education
  • Supports positive parent and child relationships
  • Provides transportation when available
  • Serves children with diagnosed disabilities (regardless of severity)
  • Provides healthy meals and snacks and nutrition education
  • Offers Center classrooms – 2, 4 or 5 days/week; ½ days or full days
  • Offers Home Base options – working together with a Home Visitor in your home weekly to help support you and prepare your child for Kindergarten
  • Is a 4-Star MN Parent Aware rated program

Head Start services for pregnant women, infants and toddlers:

  • Home Base option – year round services with a Home Visitor supporting parents during the most critical time of development, from pregnancy to toddlers
  • Promotes school readiness by providing education, health, nutritional, social and other services to eligible children and families
  • Socialization experiences in a classroom setting for parents and children
  • Believes parents are their child’s first and best teacher
  • Encourages the whole-family approach to positive, healthy child outcomes

  • Child must be 3 or 4 years old by September 1st for our preschool options
  • Eligible pregnant women, and parents with infants and/or toddlers can also apply
